Welcome to Chess Mates  Northampton

About Us

Chess Mates Northampton is a place for chess players to meet and play both socially and competitively.
Our membership of approximately 30 ranges from teenage through to retired.  Chess Mates cater for all abilities  and can boast of one International Master coming from the clubs ranks.
Chess Mates Northampton is currently the only chess  club in the town that caters for social chess players as well as players who wish to compete in league and cup competitions.

Club History

Formed just after the Second World War the club was based at the St. Giles’s Street Working Men’s Club [WMC] in the Whyte Melville room for many years until the WMC moved premises to Sheep Street in Northampton.

A nomadic existence over the past twenty years has finally ended with the Club now based at the Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club in Northampton.

Just as the game of chess has fallen in and out of favour so the membership numbers have fluctuated. We are now in a healthy position with around thirty members and thus able to provide a wide range of playing abilities for new members to test themselves against.

In 2002 the club changed its name from the Northampton W.M.C. to the present name of Chess Mates Northampton.

We currently have four teams in the Northamptonshire Silver King League.  We also compete in the County’s Knockout Cup, the John Robinson Trophy.

Our Fees

Chess is a relatively inexpensive sport but unfortunately the club does have costs such as competition entry fees and replacing equipment to meet.

New members may come along free of charge to try us out for  four weeks, after which time they will be asked to pay an annual subscription to the club treasurer.

Adults - £10 per year

Juniors - £5 per year.

Any members wishing to play league games will also need to join the ECF each year.  You can do this by going to the ECF Website.  You will only need to pay one subscription to the ECF regardless of how many teams / clubs you play for  or how many tournaments you enter.
